Weather Day

Today we received over 4 inches of snow. That is a huge event here in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Most things come to a halt and you just wait out the weather. It will warm up shortly and the snow will just be a memory. It has been five years since we've had measurable snow. I even wore my LL Bean winter boots that I bought many moons ago when we lived in Maryland and experienced all four seasons.

The dogs loved the snow, Chester even ran through the snow. Those that know Chester know that his running is also a huge event. We've had a regular wood fire going all day long, it is supposed to get down to the teens tonight. Baxter is currently occupying the spot of honor, on the rug in front of the fire. Not even the dogs get that spot. Baxter took up his favorite "TV" spot, watching all of the birds at the feeders on the deck.

I'm guessing that the cold temps will cause a couple of hours delay heading to work.

Sunday Still - Color

This week was a challenge, find color in the middle of winter. You don't realize how gray, brown, white and drab it is outside until you look hard. I could have taken the easy way out and shot a picture of one of Armywife's Quilts, but that was too easy. I took a few shots and tried some different techniques. My favorite is the diner, I need to work on the lights at night with movement. But the one I think fits the bill is this rail car parked at Cliffdale and Reilly Roads in Fayetteville, NC. The town is home to Fort Bragg and made Time Magazine and The New York Times for being America's Most Pro-Military Town. This would be a good place to say DUH. I am retired from the Army and still serving proudly in the civilian workforce.
The pictures that I took and am willing to share are below 1) Silver Diner, Springfield VA - it was FREEZING COLD, 2) Street lights zooming while the shutter was open - need some work on this and 3) Inside the Pentagon Mall. Can you tell I went to DC this past week? It also happened to be the coldest that DC has seen in 5 years.
Keep a smile on your face. We did hear from the Recruit this week. He is doing much better. It seems everyone in his Wing came down with a bug, not to mention he had a sinus infection and bronchitis. Enough sickness for one person to earn bed rest for the young Airman to be. He got his name tag this past week, now he is someone again. He did call his mom Mam during another call earlier in the week.

This is something new I found thanks to threecollie at Northview Diary. Take the photo challenge and have some fun doing it. Today is Sunday Still - macro. The shot is what a normal North Carolina yard looks like in Winter - very brown. Check out the Sunday Stills website. "Ed" has a good website too on his "Thoughts From The Road." 

The flower isn't new - taken in late August or early September, note the bee near the edge of the seeds. It is a Sunflower near our powerbox. I believe this was late August. It sure doesn't feel like August right now. Although we spent almost all day outside in short sleeve shirts raking leaves and cleaning flower beds. Winter is sort of returning to North Carolina this week with lows in the upper teens by the end of the week.

A Bit of Traffic on I-95

On Saturday, we ventured up to Smithfield, NC home of the Carolina Premium Outlet Mall. It was a sunny, but cool day and this would be better than going to Raleigh. We saddled up the Explorer and picked up The Mechanic and Pepper, Felix went too. Up I-95 we go and stop and go and stop and go and stop. Everyone and their brother must have been traveling on I-95. In the short 46 mile drive we saw 4, yes 4 accidents. All were fender benders, but it was all of the traffic and idiots trying to go 90 when it is packed with slow moving (70 mph) cars and trucks. As they say in NASCAR, cautions breed cautions. One slow moving accident breeds several slow moving accidents. The Outlet was packed, normally we don't do that stuff and we have to remind ourselves why we don't do that every once in a while. We shifted the car around the parking lot as we moved from store to store. We got as close as front row parking.When we couldn't find a decent parking spot, along with the crazy people driving around the parking lot, we decided it was time to eat. We feasted at Bob Evans. I had to drive home with a tummy full of good food and the sun beating through the windshield. It was rough staying awake. The Mechanic and Pepper gave in and fell asleep. Felix was catching some z's too. Armywife fought off the Sandman and kept me company.

Today we picked up a blue bird house and a few pieces of wood to make our own bird houses. Armywife suckered me into a trip to JoAnn Fabric. It wasn't bad, pretty quiet in there for a Sunday. It has been a gloomy misty day. We watched Donnie Darko last night. That was a strange movie. It sort of comes together at the end. Bailey is at my feet passed out from Frisbee in the back yard, very wet back yard I might add. Chester is passed out on his bed in the living room, sawing some logs as they say.

2009

We hailed in the New Year, quietly in front of a fire and movie. I believe this was our first New Years alone since the early days. We did watch the ball drop in Times Square. The cold temps kept most of the fireworks crowd inside. That was good for Chester. He doesn't like fireworks, thunder and some of the artillery that is shot at Fort Bragg. He refuses to go outside under any of those circumstances. But he (and by default, me) were lucky. Outside at the regular time, means I get to sleep to a decent the hour the next morning. Bailey could care less, especially if there is any chance we might play.

The Mechanic, FlxFlyer and me went and saw The Day The Earth Stood Still on New Years Day. It was enjoyable. Actually it was better than I thought it would be. Gort is pretty scary, much more than the 50's original movie.

Today, it was put the Christmas Lights away. I consolidated several Christmas boxes and now I actually have room for everything. It is a very damp and cool 46 outside right now. The lights are labeled and away until next year (I should say, until next Christmas).

The Airman is doing fine, at least we guess he is. Haven't heard from him since Christmas Day, guess that is a good sign.

I believe we are heading to Raleigh tomorrow, to enjoy some sun and shopping.
